In collaboration with Gillespies architects we developed the exterior lighting and public realm strategy for the regeneration of the Royal William Yard. The ex-naval storage yard set on a spectacular headland on Plymouth’s coast, was transformed into a thriving new community and tourist attraction and played a major role in the regeneration of the City’s waterfront. The Royal William Yard presented major challenges for the design team since it is the largest collection of Grade I listed buildings in the United Kingdom. Many of the buildings were illuminated at night to accentuate the impressive architectural forms. The presence of building illumination in this project both enhanced the public realm and assisted in making Royal William Yard a notable night time landmark. Upon completion the project was recognized by English Heritage as one of the 30 best development schemes in the UK involving a historic environment.
