Last week, the EQUATION Lighting Design team traveled to Barcelona for an annual study trip, experiencing the city’s rich architectural heritage, cutting-edge technology, and innovative lighting design!

From the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) Fair, where the latest advancements in audiovisual and lighting technologies were showcased, to the #Llum BCN Festival, where artistic light installations transformed urban spaces, every experience gave us new perspectives on the transformational power of light.

The highlight was visiting Casa Batlló, where Gaudí’s mastery of natural light and color was also brought to attention through augmented reality. His use of stained glass, central light wells, and organic forms showcased a profound understanding of how light shapes perception. This is an invaluable insight for our work as lighting designers.

We also explored the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, where modernist principles of minimalism and spatial flow redefined architecture, and admired truly spectacular Sagrada Família – where light plays a central role in creating ambience and evoking emotions.

Beyond the architectural discoveries, this trip was an opportunity for team bonding, sharing inspiration, and reflect on how lighting design influences the built environment.

As we return to our projects, we carry forward these insights, inspired by Barcelona’s unique fusion of history, innovation, and artistic vision.
