Borough Yards, London’s vibrant “artisan retail hub” and a mixed-use development, is situated in Southwark, next to the historic Borough Market! We are very proud to be part of this project as lighting consultants collaborating with an amazing project team led by SPPARC architects.

Visiting our completed projects is always an educational and enriching experience for the entire team, reflecting on the initial concept, talking about the commissioning process, discussing challenges and successes and experience how the lighting scheme is contributing to the overall use of the space during the time after the project completion.

Being able to experience and analyse the results of our designs in real life is something that we always value for the continuous professional development of our team and our further collaborations with the project team.

We can spotlight three key lighting aspects on this project. Firstly, one of the most important lighting aspects of the project has been to design in the context of the historic neighbourhood by using the traditional building-mounted lanterns with a modern twist.

The contemporary catenary lanterns were specified over the main public open space. Another key lighting element has been the dramatic highlighting of arched gateways to create a rhythm of retail arcades internally and externally.

And, with regards to the interior lighting, EQUATION Lighting Design team has developed a clever design of the new spandrel integrated spotlights that, by uplighting, are revealing the beauty of the existing railway arches brickwork, and also providing the circulation and accent lighting to the retail arcade.
