Alex is an interior architecture graduate from the University of the West of England. Her passion for design was sparked from a young age, beginning her journey at Arts University Bournemouth, where she earned a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design. Moving to Bristol to pursue a Bachelor’s in Interior Architecture, Alex developed a deep understanding of how spaces can nurture the soul. A pivotal lecture on lighting design inspired her to shift focus from interior architecture to lighting. Now, as a trainee lighting designer, Alex believes in the transformative power of light to enhance the connection between body and space.

We asked her to answer three questions, and here is what she shared with us:

𝐀: The role of lighting within architecture is subtle yet so powerful. It has the profound ability to change the way we think, feel, and behave within a space without us even knowing it. Lighting shapes atmospheres and adds another dimension to architecture, giving a building that extra drama and charisma!

𝐐: 𝘈𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘺, 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯?
𝐀: Coming from a background in Interior Architecture, I never fully appreciated the level of detail involved in lighting design. I am amazed by the attention to detail that goes into every project. This is what has stood out to me the most, particularly whilst working for a company like Equation where there is such a clear focus on precision.

𝐀: Having a South African upbringing and going on many wild and adventurous family holidays, I’ve always been taught to think differently. This is something that I am passionate about as a way of life and a mean for creative problem-solving. This reflects my personality as a designer, I strive to steer away from the norms and try something new, challenging boundaries and pushing limits.
