RIBA National Award 2024
Today, we celebrate another prestigious accolade for #ElizabethLine! We are delighted to announce that the project received the RIBA National Award 2024 following the previous RIBA Regional London Award 2024 and RIBA London Building of the Year.
All the winning national entries will now be considered for the forthcoming RIBA Stirling Prize, with the shortlist to be announced on July 31st!
Two years after opening, the Elizabeth Line has already received multiple architectural, construction and lighting design awards both nationally and internationally, and continues to be celebrated for its impact on London’s transport infrastructure and exemplar collaborative and integrated design across the line and its stations.
The team behind the line-wide design— Grimshaw, Atkins, Maynard Design Consultancy and EQUATION Lighting Design—played a unique role in developing the strategy that conceptually and functionally binds together the distinct stations along the network and creates an intuitive, enjoyable travel experience.
In today’s post, we would like to spotlight the #sixprinciples of Lighting Design for the Line-wide Lighting Design Scope.
We begin by enhancing the passengers’ overall experience through thoughtful illumination, creating layers of light using ambient and accent lighting. This approach assists wayfinding and decision-making with strategic use of different color temperatures. Architectural integration is key, where all luminaire components are incorporated into the design, contributing to a consistent visual language across the Crossrail sub-surface environment. Visual comfort is achieved through indirect lighting and diffuse luminous surfaces, reducing shadows and reflections on materials and finishes. Finally, good vertical illuminance is highlighted to improve facial recognition of fellow passengers, enhance the legibility of signs for wayfinding, and aid in the detection of obstacles. Together, these principles ensure a safe, comfortable, and visually cohesive environment for all passengers.
