IALD UK talk by Keith Miller – Elizabeth Line

It has already been a month since the last IALD UK event, and we extend our sincere gratitude to the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD)UK, Designplan Lighting, Beatrice Bertolini, Emma Cogswell, and Hoare Lea team for their amazing organization. Our huge thanks also go to everyone who participated in the Elizabeth Line talk delivered by our director, Keith Miller!

The Elizabeth Line stands as one of Europe’s biggest construction projects; it is a 73-mile railway in south-east England. Keith presented the process behind this colossal project and emphasizing the pivotal role of lighting in diverse areas, including the escalators and lifts, the tunnelled concourses, and the cross passages leading to the platforms!

Equation’s involvement in the project began in early 2009. The biggest challenge was to push the boundaries of what was technically possible using nascent LED technology, looking confidently ahead to what would be achievable when the Elizabeth Line finally opened in 2022.

Let’s spotlight the key elements of the lighting design concept for the platforms:

 ▪ The final installation on the platforms at the Elizabeth Line has created a fully integrated lighting solution that reveals and enhances the architectural design of the platforms.

 ▪ The platform lighting has delivered the client’s original vision to create a modern, minimal, elegant, and functional transport system that enhances the passenger experience.

 ▪ What is quite extraordinary about the Elizabeth Line is the scale of the underground environment. The platforms are 250 meters long. The visually continuous light panel on the platform edge screen appears to extend towards infinity.

 ▪ As the project’s lighting designers, our greatest satisfaction lies in contributing significantly to the improved daily passenger experience of those who travel and work on the line every day of the week.

Last but not least, Elizabeth Line has received multiple architectural and lighting awards, with one of the most recent accolades being the highly coveted IALD Award of Merit in 2023!
